News in brief

News Update - 5th May

The election result gave no overall majority to a single party and thus there is ‘no overall control’.

We met on Sunday and elected Cllr Margaret Phipps (Commons Ward) as Group Leader and Cllr David Flagg (Burton & Grange Ward) as Deputy Leader.

In a statement the Group said: "We will look to work across party and across the area first and foremost to protect the interests of the people of Christchurch, which is what they elected us to do.

We also recognise that the new BCP Council must be able to function efficiently and effectively and deliver for all its residents and that most people want Councillors to work together in a spirit of co-operation.

In this endeavour we will talk to all parties, groups and individuals except the Conservatives, who pushed the merger through against the wishes of the people of Christchurch.

To work with them would be a betrayal of our election promises and what we have campaigned for in the last four years."

BCP Council Elections – 2nd May

We would thank you for the tremendous support given to the ‘Christchurch Independents’ team at the polls. 8 out of 10 of our members were elected as Councillors.

  • Cllr Lesley Dedman & Cllr Paul Hilliard – Mudeford, Stanpit & West Highcliffe Ward
  • Cllr Margaret Phipps & Cllr Colin Bungey – Commons Ward
  • Cllr David Flagg & Cllr Simon McCormack – Burton & Grange Ward
  • Cllr Nick Geary & Cllr Nigel Brooks – Highcliffe & Walkford Ward

It is a privilege and honour to serve the folk of our community and we look forward to ‘getting to grips’ with the issues that concern our residents.

Highcliffe Zig-Zag path

The work on the zig zag path so much missed in Highcliffe is nearing completion after your local Independent Councillors also fought to get CBC’s original refusal to reinstate it overturned. Work continues to a very high standard to safely restore this much used amenity in readiness for the summer.

The disabled ramp down to Avon/Friars beaches has now been rebuilt and the grassed area is due to be reseeded.

Coastal replenishment and restoration of the stone groins has been carried out on Avon Beach to ensure that the storms which we expect during the winter cannot again wash away the beach huts and cause houses near the beach to be evacuated.

I have lived with my family in Christchurch for 22 years, and in that time have owned and run my own business within the Town Centre, building strong ties with the Christchurch Community. I have a strong belief in protecting our Town with its shops and restaurants, and keeping a close eye on over development, causing a deprivation of a thriving town, whereby flats replace shops. I want to do my best at serving the Christchurch Town Centre as a voice for its people.
